Safety tips for kids

Always ask your parents’ permission before cooking anything. If a recipe uses knives, the stove or oven, or any other kitchen appliance, a parent will need to supervise.

Kid-friendly cooking tools

Cooking is fun. Sure, you need a little knowledge to whip up something tasty, but it’s really about commonsense as well as a big dollop of imagination. Having the right tools is necessary and will make your cooking journey a lot smoother. Here are the tools we recommend for these easy recipe for kids:

  • Measuring spoons: Small metal or plastic spoons that measure ingredients in 1/4 teaspoon, 1/2 teaspoon, 1 teaspoon and 1 tablespoon quantities. Make sure the tablespoon is 20ml and not 15ml.
  • Mixing spoon: Long-handled spoons for stirring and mixing. Wooden, plastic and silicone spoons are all good choices. Have separate spoons for sweet and savoury.
  • Whisk: These are called balloon whisks because of their shape. They are the best tool for whipping air into egg whites or cream. They also stiffen or increase the volume of a mixture.
  • Child-safe knife: Knives with rounded serrations so they cut food and not fingers.
  • Scissors: Extremely useful for all sorts of little jobs in the kitchen.
  • Spatula: Soft and flexible spatulas for scraping bowls and sides of pans. They are also great for decorating cakes with icing.
