Butter cream


1.Preheat oven to 180&degC; grease and line deep 23cm-square cake pan. Make cake according to directions on packet, pour into pan; bake in moderate oven about 1 hour. Stand cake in pan 5 minutes; turn onto wire rack to cool. Using serrated knife, level cake top.
2.Cut cake in half; place cakes together at the shorter edges, cut-side down, as shown. Using paper patterns from pattern sheet, cut blade from cake and handle from jam roll.
3.Assemble cake pieces on 34cm x 43cm prepared board, cut-side down, to form dagger; discard remaining cake. Using small serrated knife, cut blade edges at an angle to make bevel.
4.Cut shield from cardboard. Using gold glitter glue, draw pattern on shield. Cut 80cm from cord; using craft glue, attach cord around edge of shield. Position shield under handle of dagger.
5.To make butter cream, beat butter until white as possible, gradually beat in half the sifted icing sugar then milk, then remaining icing sugar. Beat until smooth.
6.Tint ⅖ of the butter cream with red colouring; spread all over handle of dagger. Tint remaining butter cream with black colouring to make grey; spread all over blade.
7.Decorate blade with silver and blue cachous and silver almond; decorate handle with gold cachous, Bo-Peeps and gold almonds.
8.Cut 20cm from remaining cord; wrap around join of blade and handle.
9.Tie remaining cord to tassel; loop around dagger.
