Ingredients
Butter cream
Method
1.Preheat oven to 180°C. Line 12-hole (⅓-cup/80ml) standard muffin pan with 10 standard paper cases (5 red, 5 white). Prepare a 30cm (12-inch) square cake board for muffins to stand on.
2.Make cake according to directions on packet. Drop 2 1/2 tablespoons of mixture into each paper case; bake about 20 minutes. Stand cakes in pan 5 minutes before turning, top-side up, onto wire rack to cool.
3.To make butter cream; beat butter until white as possible, gradually beat in half the sifted icing sugar then milk, then remaining icing sugar. Beat until smooth. Divide butter cream equally into two small bowls; tint one red and the other white.
4.Spread red butter cream over five cakes in red cases, and white butter cream over five cakes in white cases.
5.Use Musk Sticks to make noughts and crosses grid; secure to cake board with a little butter cream. Using picture as a guide, position cakes on board; secure with a little butter cream. Top white cakes with fruit rings for noughts; use Tic Tacs to make crosses on the red cakes.
You’ll have about 1 1/2 cup of the cake mixture left over; make more noughts and crosses cakes for your guests. This is a very easy birthday cake to make; it is suitable for boys and girls alike. You can make it in any colour you like.
