1.Preheat oven to 180°C (160°C fan-forced). Grease 14cm x 21cm loaf pan; line base with baking paper.
2.Combine poppy seeds and milk in medium bowl; cover, stand 1 hour.
3.Add butter, extract, sugar, egg and sifted flour to poppy seed mixture; beat mixture on low speed with electric mixer until combined. Increase speed to medium; beat about 3 minutes or until mixture is paler in colour.
4.Pour mixture into prepared pan; bake 1 hour. Stand cake in pan 5 minutes before turning, top-side up, onto wire rack to cool.
