Ingredients

Buttercream (1 quantity)

Method

1.Pre-heat oven to moderate. Bake cakes as per packet instructions
2.To make buttercream. Beat the butter in a small bowl with an electric beater until the butter is as white as possible. (This will result in a whiter buttercream which will give you better results if colouring it). Gradually beat in half of the sifted icing sugar, then the milk, then the remaining sifted icing sugar.Beat until the butter cream is smooth and spreadable. Keep scraping down the side of the bowl during beating.
3.Divide butter cream evenly into three medium bowls, tint pink, green and yellow.
4.Trim cakes. Secure two 10cm cakes to the 10cm cardboards with a little butter cream. Secure the remaining 10cm cake to the 10cm wooden board. Secure the two 12cm cakes to the 12cm boards.
5.Push 3 trimmed skewers into both 12cm cakes to support the top tiers.
6.Secure the two 10cm cakes on the cardboards to the 12cm cakes. You will have 2 x two-tiered cakes and 1 x one-tier cake.
7.Spread cakes all over with butter cream. Using picture as a guide, decorate cakes with jelly beans to match the colours of the butter cream.

Equipment: 2 x 10cm (4-inch) round cardboard cake boards. 10cm (4-inch) round wooden cake board 2 x 12cm (4¾-inch) round wooden cake boards. 6 wooden skewers. Use ganache instead of butter cream, if you prefer. Once the cakes are covered in butter cream or ganache, they will keep for about a week at a cool room temperature. The jelly beans can be placed on the cakes as soon as the butter cream has been applied. Secure two 10cm cakes to 10cm cardboards with a little butter cream. Secure remaining 10cm cake to the 10cm wooden board. Using a sharp serrated knife, trim skewers to the height of the cake. Push skewers into the largest cakes to support the top tiers. Once all cakes are on boards, secure two of the smaller cakes onto the larger cakes with a little of the butter cream. These quirky little cakes are so easy to make, and are ideal for kids’ parties and baby showers. Mix and match the colours and flavours of the jelly beans and the butter cream to suit the occasion.
