Artist’s sketchbook cake

Get the kids involved and let them go crazy and draw pictures on the icing cake, or draw their favourite character!

Method

1.Level cake top. Secure cake, cut-side down, on cake board with a little frosting. Spread frosting over top and sides of cake.
2.Knead ready-made icing on a surface dusted with a little sifted icing sugar until icing loses its stickiness. Roll icing on a surface dusted with a little sifted icing sugar until large enough to cover cake.
3.Using a rolling pin, lift icing onto cake. Dust your hands lightly with icing sugar; smooth icing over cake. Trim icing neatly around base of cake; stand overnight to allow icing to firm.
4.Using coloured markers, let the kids go crazy and draw all over the cake themselves, or decorate with their favourite character.

If you prefer, you can buy food decorating pens online or at good cake decorating stores. If using butter cream instead of vanilla frosting, you will need one quantity of butter cream. Make this recipe a day ahead so that the ready-made icing dries hard enough to draw on.
