1.Preheat oven to 180°C (160°C fan-forced). Lightly grease a 12-hole friand pan.
2.In a bowl, combine icing sugar, hazelnut meal and flour. Mix in butter and vanilla, stirring gently until just combined. Fold apple through.
3.In a clean bowl, lightly whisk egg-whites until frothy. Fold through hazelnut mixture.
4.Divide mixture evenly between friand recesses. Sprinkle with hazelnuts. Bake 20-25 minutes, or until cooked when tested.
5.Cool 5 minutes in pan, then turn onto a wire rack to cool completely. Dust with icing sugar, to serve.
