For this delicious steak pie, we combine tender braised chuck steak with caramelised onion, hearty vegetables and a rich sauce. Topped with creamy slices of potato then baked until golden, it’s a comfort-filled dish that’ll have the whole family going back for seconds.

Ingredients

Method

1.

Preheat oven to 180°C (160°C fan-forced). Dust the steak in flour and season with salt and pepper. Heat half the oil in a large heavy-based ovenproof pan over medium-high heat. Cook beef, in batches, for 6-8 minutes or until well browned all over. Remove from pan and set aside.

2.

Add the remaining oil to the pan, add the mushrooms, carrot and sliced garlic; cook, stirring occasionally, for 3-4 minutes. Add the tomato paste, red wine, Worcestershire sauce, stock and mustard.

3.

Return beef to pan and bring to a simmer. Cover with a tight-fitting lid, transfer to oven; roast 2 hours or until meat is tender.

4.

Remove from the oven and stir through the caramelised onion. Season.

5.

Place potatoes, cream and crushed garlic in a bowl. Season with salt and freshly ground pepper and toss to combine.

6.

Pour braised beef into a 3-litre ovenproof dish. Layer top with potato, overlapping slightly. Brush the potato with half the melted butter. Cover with foil and roast for 45 minutes. Uncover, increase heat to 200°C (180°C fan-forced), brush with the remaining melted butter, bake for 30 minutes or until golden.

7.

Set aside for 10 minutes. Serve topped with parsley.

Can this pie be made in advance?

The beef mixture can be made up to two days ahead or frozen for up to 3 months. You may need to add a little extra stock before topping with the potato mixture.

Steak & potato pie ingredient tips

  • CARAMELISED ONION: Store-bought caramelised onion gives great depth of flavour and helps to bind the beef mixture. Most brands are like a relish, typically containing onions, salt, sugar, vinegar and mild spices.
  • POTATOES: We used a mandoline to slice the potatoes very thinly. If they are thicker, the initial baking time (covered with foil) will be more.
