What’s the difference between a chicken stew and a casserole?
Traditionally a stew would be cooked on the stove and a casserole would be cooked in the oven, as the name “casserole” actually comes from the French baking dish it was originally made in. But the terms casserole and stew are often used interchangeably in Australia, New Zealand the UK and some other countries. In fact, not all of the chicken casserole recipes here are cooked in the oven.
There is one notable exception, though. In the US, the term casserole is typically used to refer to a baked dish that includes meat, vegetables, sauce, pasta (or another starch) and cheese. So, some American chicken casserole recipes might actually be closer to what we’d call a “pasta bake” in Australia.
