This is simplest and easiest way to create stewed apple for the perfect pie fillings and cereal toppers. A touch of sweetness, cloves and lemon makes these stewed apples even more versatile. As well as sweet recipes, they’re also the perfect companion to a roast pork – and it only takes 15 minutes to make them.

In a medium saucepan, combine al ingredients. Bring to the boil on high, then reduce heat to low and simmer for about 10 minutes, or until fruit is pulpy.

Beat with a wooden spoon until smooth. Use as a topping for ice-cream or cereal.

If you want the fruit to hold its shape during cooking, bring water and sugar to the boil, add fruit, reduce heat to low and simmer until tender.

To turn this into a spiced apple sauce for pork, add 15g butter and 1/2 teaspoon mixed spice to fruit during cooking.

Can you freeze stewed apples?

Stewed apples can be frozen for up to a month, or refrigerated for up to a week. So if you stew more apples than you need for a recipe, you can simply store them in a sealed container in your fridge or freezer and use them for breakfast or another recipe.

Is applesauce the same as stewed apples?

Applesauce usually has a smoother consistency the fruit is often cooked for longer, whisked or blended to create more of a “sauce”, whereas stewed apples hold some of their shape.

You may also find that there are more savoury recipes for applesauce, as well as the classic sweet versions.

What apples are good for stewing?

You can choose any apples you want, although you will find different qualities depending on the variety. For example, green Granny Smith apples are popular for baking because of their crisp and tart flavour, as well as how they hold their shape when cooked, while Royal Gala and Pink Lady apple varieties are sweeter. But Aussie Apples says that all three are great for pies, sauces and more.
