Method

1.Secure cakes, long sides together, on the cake board with a little frosting. Shape cake if necessary into a book shape. Spread frosting over top and sides of cake.
2.Draw lines on cake with blue writing icing.
3.Cut blueberry and raspberry licorice tubes into desired length for pens, trim one end into a point using a small sharp knife. Pipe a little blue and red decorating icing on the points of each lolly for pen nibs.
4.Place black licorice strip down the middle of the cakes. Decorate base of cake with sour straps trimming to fit around cake. Outline the top of the sour strap with red writing icing.
5.Using green and red writing icing, and picture as a guide, decorate cake, you could make it a maths book, as we have done here, or write a poem, a short story or draw pictures on the book.

EQUIPMENT 30cm x 40cm (12-inch x16-inch) rectangular cake board Wooden skewer Test kitchen tips: If using butter cream instead of the vanilla frosting, you will need one quantity of butter cream. Look for cakes with slightly domed tops, otherwise you will have to trim the cake tops to create the curved book shape. You will need two slab cakes for this recipe.
