Calling all cake lovers and fans of Australia’s favourite family, the Bluey Duck Cake Cafe is popping up in Sydney, this weekend only!
Inspired by the Duck Cake episode of Bluey, where Bandit tackles the Rubber Ducky Cake from our beloved The Women’s Weekly Children’s Birthday Cake Book, the ticketed event gives fans the opportunity to visit the Heeler family kitchen and decorate a mini version of the Duck Cake. Tickets to the cafe experience are free but places are limited.
What is the Bluey Duck Cake Cafe?

This interactive event by BBC Studios gives fans the opportunity to step inside the Heeler family kitchen or wander into Bluey’s backyard where cafegoers can decorate their very own ‘Duckling’ cake pop, a mini version of our iconic Rubber Ducky Cake, first published in the Children’s Birthday Cake book in 1980. The book celebrated its 45th birthday this year, with celebrations including a collaboration with The Royal Australian Mint on birthday cake themed coins, including a Duck Cake design on a $1 coin.
The cafe pop up is not just about cakes, though. Little ones (and let’s be honest, the grown-ups too) can have a meet and greet with both Bluey and Bingo as well.

Bringing the Duck Cake to life

Creator of the Duck Cake, Agnes Lee, is helping launch the cafe pop up.
“When I first created this cake for The Australian Women’s Weekly Children’s Birthday Cake Book, I never imagined it would one day be rediscovered by a whole new generation of families around the world,” said Lee.
“It’s incredibly special to see how the show has brought new life to the cake, and to see the Bluey Duck Cake Cafe celebrate it in such a fun and creative way, for kids, parents, and grandparents alike.”
Lee was known in the Test Kitchen as Engineer Agnes thanks to her ability to make the trickiest cakes – she is also responsible for the Choo Choo Train Cake that features on the book’s cover. So it’s no surprise that she was the employee charged with making the Duck Cake, an idea inspired by the rubber ducky used by the grandson of The Weekly’s then food director Ellen Sinclair . It was the last cake to be made for the book and would go on to be arguably the most famous.
It’s party time!
Special guest David McCormack, voice of Bluey and Bingo’s dad Bandit will be joining Lee at the cafe’s launch.
“Awww, DUCK CAKE! Bluey is all about those memory-making family moments and the duck cake is pure Aussie nostalgia,” said McCormack. “It’s awesome to see something from the show leap off the screen and into real life for the kiddos (and big kids) to enjoy!”
BBC Studios ANZ Head of Brands & Marketing, Brands & Licensing Madeleine Santos says the Duck Cake holds a special place in the hearts of many Australians.
“The Bluey Duck Cake episode brought a beloved Aussie icon to life for a whole new generation, and we’re thrilled to take that one step further with the Bluey Duck Cake Cafe,” she said.
