Braun MultiQuick 9 review verdict

GOOD FOR: Anyone who wants to make everyday cooking quicker and easier!

What we love

  • It is easy to use and easy to clean.
  • The Braun stick blender is fast and powerful. It blends, chops and whisks within seconds or minutes, depending on the attachment, ingredient or dish.
  • You control the speed of the appliance by squeezing the Smartspeed switch, making it easy to operate with one hand.
  • It’s a multi-tasking appliance that can do the job of several others. Blender, food processor, hand mixer/whisk, mini chopper. Plus it has a dough hook and can mash and puree.

What you need to know

  • The blades are very sharp, so be careful when handling the attachments and follow the safety instructions.
  • The appliance can only be used continuously for between 1 to 3 minutes, depending on which accessory is being used, before cooling down for up to 5 minutes. This can increase recipe prep time.
  • It took me a while to get the hang of pressing the safety button off each time I wanted to blend. It is a great safety feature to have.
  • It doesn’t come with a storage solution to keep all the parts together.

What’s good about the Braun MultiQuick 9?

These days there’s an appliance for just about everything. While I do love a clever kitchen gadget, my limited cupboard space means a multi-function appliance that can save space and time is the obvious choice. Come dinnertime with my family, especially on busy weeknights, I want fast prep and easy clean-up.

“Soup season’s new best friend, the Braun MultiQuick 9 can blend a smooth and silky soup in just 1 minute. It can also whisk egg whites easily, finely chop onion, garlic, nuts and herbs, and even mash potatoes!”

Chanel Gellin, Women’s Weekly Food Digital Content Producer

Hand blender

  • With a powerful motor, this stick blender boasts an ActiveBlade shaft which means the blades can adjust to what is being blended. Use it for soups, smoothies, dips and more.
  • There are three speeds to easily choose between – low speed, high speed and pulse. You control the speed by how light or firm you press the Smartspeed switch while operating.
  • It comes with the sharp ActiveBlade blending attachment, a whisk, puree accessory and a beaker jar with lid.

Mini chopper

  • Sure, you have more control over the size of your dice when using a knife, but chopping onions in the mini chopper meant less tears – win!
  • It’s also great for chopping herbs, nuts, making pesto or dressings.
  • It comes with a chopping blade and an ice crushing blade.

Food processor

  • I use my existing food processor a lot – from chopping vegies to blitzing biscuits for a sweet slice base. What I love about the Braun MultiQuick 9 food processor is the very generous 2 litre bowl. There’s also no hefty base motor. Simply click in the hand blender motor at the top and blitz.
  • As well as the dicer blade, dough and kneading hook, it comes with inserts to finely and coarsely slice, shred or julienne, and a slicer to make fries.

How to use the Braun MultiQuick 9

It’s essential to read the entire instruction manual, however daunting. The illustrations and corresponding sections detail all the parts and accessories. Becoming familiar with these and all the included tips will help you make the most of the appliance’s features.

It all starts with the hand blender attachment. This easily attaches to the many accessories with Braun’s EasyClick Plus release buttons.

Tips & tricks for using the Braun MultiQuick 9

  • The hand blender motor heats up but doesn’t get too hot to handle. Because of this, there are timing restrictions:
The hand blender can be used for 2 minutes at a time, then must cool down for 5 minutes. The soup I made was blended in 1 minute so this timeframe was not an issue.
When whisking, 3 minutes is the maximum time it can be running, then it requires 3 minutes to cool down before you can continue whisking for a further 3 minutes, if required. This impacted my pavlova making.
-When pureeing it can be operated for a maximum of 1 minute at a time, then must cool down for 4 minutes.
  • The instruction manual says use no more than 4 egg whites for best results when whisking. I used 6 egg whites for the pavlova and it handled it well.
  • Use a deep bowl when whisking or blending to prevent any splashing out.
  • Start on a lower speed and lighter touch to start when chopping or dicing in the mini chopper and food processor. It’s a very fast and powerful appliance, and the sharp blades can take an onion from perfectly finely chopped to mush in just 5 seconds (see picture below).

Less is more… Onions can go from perfectly chopped to pureed in just 5 seconds, so slow down on the speed button!
  • The noise is as expected for a powerful machine – it’s not whisper quiet but not so loud you can’t hear the TV in the background.
  • It is so easy to connect the various attachments, then pop them into dishwasher to clean (accessories only, not the gearboxes).

Results from our Braun MultiQuick 9 tests

Using the Braun MultiQuick 9 to prepare the ingredients
The Braun MultiQuick 9 quickly chops onion and garlic, but isn’t the right tool for chopped pumpkin.

Soup: Food processor & hand blender

I tested these two functions with our popular creamy pumpkin & potato soup recipe (it’s so quick, simple and delicious!).

  • I used the XL food processor to chop the onion and garlic. Onions should be peeled and quartered first, and garlic cloves can be peeled and whole. On the lower speed setting, it took 10 seconds to finely chop these ingredients. A huge time saver compared to manually chopping onions while battling watering eyes.
  • I thought I’d try chopping the peeled and large chopped pumpkin in the food processor. This was a bad idea, as even though the blades can handle raw vegetables, it resulted in half the pumpkin being finely chopped and half in big chunks. It’s not the best use of the appliance, stick to the knife and chopping board for this part.
Using the Braun MultiQuick 9 to blend the soup
  • After the soup was cooked and cooled for 15 minutes, I used the hand blender to blend the soup from chunky to smooth. Using the high speed and moving the stick up, down and around the saucepan (careful not to scrape the surface!), the soup was blended within 1 minute and resulted in a beautifully silky and smooth texture.

Pavlova & cream: Whisk accessory

  • What could be a better test of a whisk’s capabilities than our classic pavlova? Fast and powerful, the whisk attachment whisked the 6 egg whites to soft peaks in 3 minutes.
  • As mentioned above, the whisk can only be used for 3 minutes before cooling down for 3 minutes. The pavlova recipe requires the sugar to be slowly added to the egg whites while whisking for 6-7 minutes. Following the 3 minute cool down, I slowly added the sugar in 2 x 3 minute stages, with a 3 minute wait in between. The total time was 15 minutes.
  • The hand blender with the whisk attached is easy to use with one hand while adding the sugar with the other. However, I found my hand cramping from holding down the power button for those 9 minutes.
  • Pausing halfway between adding the sugar didn’t have a negative impact on the stability or texture of the pavlova. The meringue was thick and glossy, and when baked and cooled, the centre was perfectly marshmallow-y.
  • For whipped cream, I added pure cream, icing sugar mixture and vanilla extract to a bowl and used high speed for 1 minute for a thick whipped cream. I made a second batch of cream using the low speed and a lighter touch – this resulted in a smoother, softer whipped cream.

Mashed potato: Puree accessory

I was excited to try the puree accessory with our classic mashed potato recipe! With the tender potatoes, milk and butter in the saucepan, it took the Braun MultiQuick 9 just 2 minutes to produce a smooth mash. I used high speed, moving the stick up, down and around the saucepan.

Using the puree accessory is easier on the arms compared to manually mashing potatoes, and gives a quick and great result.

Pesto: Mini chopper

Using the Braun mini chopper to make pesto

I love to make fresh pesto, and the mini chopper is perfect for this. I added in chunks of block parmesan cheese, peeled garlic cloves and cashews. In 10 seconds it blitzed these into a consistent fine chop. I added fresh basil leaves, lemon juice, salt and pepper for another 10 second blitz, then extra virgin olive oil for another 5 seconds. Fresh pesto in 30 seconds! I loved the ease of popping the chopper bowl and blade into the dishwasher for a thorough clean.
