What is an air fryer?
An air fryer is basically an amped-up benchtop convection oven that works by pushing hot air around food. The rapid circulation of air in the confined space helps make food crisp – just like deep-frying but with much less oil. For example, a medium serving of air-fried hot chips contains 4–6g of fat versus 17g for the deep-fried equivalent. You can also use it to cook plenty of other snacks and meals, depending on the size and type of air fryer you buy.
Beyond that, air fryers can save on energy bills when used instead of a conventional oven. For example, the Energy Saving Trust in the UK calculated that it would cost £0.14 to cook a 600g chicken breast compared to £0.20 in an electric oven – a difference of about 30 per cent.
Of course, the potential savings depend on several factors, including the type of oven and air fryer, with the organisation stating that an air fryer would be “best for one or two people” (depending on the size).
Different types of air fryers
There isn’t one best air fryer in Australia that will suit every household. In fact, there are many different sizes and shapes of air fryers available – from compact, spaceship-looking models with a deep pull-out drawer, to double-drawer air fryers, to ones that resemble mini ovens. The latter are also designed to sit on a benchtop, but they’re less compact and more comparable in size to a microwave oven.
Here’s a rundown of two of the main types of air fryers you might consider in Australia.
Basket air fryers
These compact versions range in capacity from 3–4 litres up to 6–7 litres. With this style, the base of the handled basket is perforated and slightly elevated from the base of the pan, which collects oil drippings and cooking juices. While they’re nifty, they don’t allow for large volumes of food, and you may not be able to cook an entire family meal in them.
A recent innovation in this space is the two-drawer air fryer. As the name suggests, it has two drawers so you can cook different things at the same time – such as chicken and vegetables – making it easier to get meals on the table. The best models can sync up each drawer depending on whether you’re cooking batches of the same thing or different components of a meal.

Oven air fryers
These larger air fryers open like an oven with a door. They offer the convenience of a compact oven with the benefits of an air fryer – and for a single person or couple, could even work as their main cooking appliance.
These models come equipped with two or three wire racks, allowing a variety of foods to be cooked at the same time.
What are the advantages of air fryers?
Air fryers offer several advantages that make them a staple appliance for families, couples, and singles:

They use hot air circulation to cook food, requiring significantly less oil compared to deep frying.

Despite using less oil, air fryers can achieve a crispy, golden-brown finish on your food, mimicking the texture of deep-frying.

Air fryers can cook a wide variety of dishes beyond just hot chips and wedges. Think roasted vegetables, chicken wings, frozen snacks – even reheating leftovers with a satisfying crunch.
Faster cooking times
Compared to traditional ovens, air fryers typically cook food faster thanks to their efficient heat circulation.
Convenience and safety
They’re compact, easy to clean, and great for smaller kitchens or busy lifestyles. Plus, they eliminate the risk of hot oil splatters common in deep frying.
What else you should know
An air fryer is far more than a single-use appliance for making crunchy chips. The name is a bit of a misnomer – it’s not a deep fryer, and it offers many of the same benefits as an oven.
Its major limitation is interior capacity. Be sure the dish or dishes you plan to use are heatproof and fit comfortably, with room for air to circulate.
Avoid anything too tall that may touch the top element, or it will burn.
If you’re baking, steer clear of very light or liquidy batters, as the strong airflow can cause the batter to spit or puff up strangely.
Keep an eye on sugary mixtures – browning happens quickly in an air fryer.
Frying
Air fryers are great at crisping dry ingredients, but they don’t work well for wet-battered foods – these tend to stick rather than crisp. It’s not as simple as swapping frying oil for an air fryer; you’ll often need to adapt your method to get similar results.
Air fryer safety
Always read the manufacturer’s instructions before use. Air fryers get hot, so make sure there’s enough space around them on the benchtop. The rear vent releases steam (and grease), so the surface behind the air fryer will need wiping down.
Once the basket is pulled out, treat it like something hot from the oven – it will be hot!
Take care when adding or removing food, and clean the basket and outer pan after every use. Grease and trapped food can cause smoking and burning during your next cook.
