Retro recipes: what were we cooking in the 90s?

The 1990s might feel like it was only yesterday, but these recipes sure feel like a blast from the past!

It may have been the era of Beverly Hills 90210, sideburns and slap bracelets, but the culinary world was also having a lot of fun.

Goat’s cheese was all the rage, chicken caesar salads were the must-have lunch dish, and molten chocolate cakes were on the dessert menu at every restaurant worth its salt.

We’ve taken a trip down memory lane with the dishes that have been our favourites for more than 20 (yes, 20!) years.

Whether you pronounce it “bruh-shetta” or “bru-sketta”, bruschetta was truly the go-to starter choice during the 90s. Characterised by fresh acidic tomatoes, punchy garlic flavours and and tangy red onion, classic bruschetta was everywhere. Since then, numerous adventurous remixes have emerged and continue to be popular – like this artichoke and feta bruschetta and mushroom and spinach bruschetta.

onion focaccia

Foccacia rose to dizzying heights of popularity during the 90s; try this onion foccacia for a light, fluffy and flavoursome lunch, served warm and drizzled with olive oil.

molten chocolate pudding

The ultimate chocolate dessert, we have the 90s to thank for these warm, gooey dollops of heaven. Sponge on the outside, hot, chocolate sauce on the inside, serve these molten chocolate puddings with a scoop of ice-cream for a winning sweet treat.
