Method
1.Preheat oven to moderate, 180°C. Lightly grease 2 large baking trays.
2.In a large bowl, using an electric mixer, cream butter and sugars together until light and fluffy. Beat in egg and vanilla until combined.
3.Sift flours and soda together. Lightly fold into the creamed butter.
4.Roll level tablespoonfuls of dough into balls. Arrange on prepared trays 4cm apart. Flatten slightly. Top with 5 or 6 Smarties.
5.Bake, 10-12 minutes, until golden. Cool on trays, 5 minutes, before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely. Store in an airtight container.
These biscuits will still be soft when they’re cooked, but will harden on cooling.
