Sangria

This classic Spanish drink can be prepared a day ahead, but add the lemonade just before serving. Oranges are the traditional fruit to add, but you can be as inventive as you like.

Ingredients

Sangria
  • 1/4 cup (60ml) orange juice
  • 1/4 cup (55g) caster sugar
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 4 whole cloves
  • 2 (480g) oranges, peeled, sliced thinly
  • 750 millilitre red wine (such as shiraz)
  • 3 cup (750ml) lemonade

    In a small saucepan, heat juice, sugar, cinnamon and cloves. Stir over heat until sugar is dissolved. Pour over orange slices in large bowl or jug. Cover and refrigerate for several hours or overnight.

    Remove cloves and cinnamon. Add wine to the orange mixture. Just before serving, add lemonade.

    Serve in wine glasses.
