1.Grease a 23cm square slab pan, line base and sides with paper; grease paper well. Preheat oven to 160°C.
2.Combine apples, dates, soda and water in bowl, cover, cool.
3.Cream butter and sugar in small bowl with electric mixer until light and fluffy, then beat in egg. Transfer mixture to large bowl, stir in the sifted flour and apple mixture.
4.Pour into prepared pan. Bake for about 1¼ hours. Stand 5 minutes before turning on to wire rack to cool.
