Gourmet hot dogs with cider-braised onions

Cider braised onions turn these hot dogs into a gourmet experience. You can use any leftover onions (if there are any!) as a side for any meat dish.

Gourmet hot dogs with cider-braised onions
  • 4 thick beef sausages
  • 1 brown onion, sliced thinly
  • 4 sprigs fresh thyme
  • 1/4 cup (60ml) apple cider
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 300 gram packet dry coleslaw
  • 2 tablespoon bottled coleslaw dressing
  • 4 white bread rolls
  • 2 tablespoon wholegrain mustard
  • 80 gram smoked cheddar, sliced thinly
  • 1/3 cup (95g) barbecue sauce

    Heat oiled barbecue grill plate; cook sausages, turning, 15 minutes or until cooked. Cut in half lengthways.

    Meanwhile, cook onion and thyme on the heated oiled barbecue flat plate, stirring, 3 minutes or until onion softens. Add apple cider and sugar; cook, stirring occasionally, 3 minutes or until onion is caramelised.

    Place coleslaw in a large bowl with dressing; toss gently to combine.

    Split bread rolls lengthways through the top; microwave on HIGH (100%) 30 seconds or until warm. Spread rolls with mustard; fill with sausages, coleslaw, onion and cheese. Serve with sauce.


You can use four small baguettes instead of the white rolls, if you prefer.
