1.Cut hot cross buns into 1.5cm-thick slices and spread lightly with butter. Arrange buttered bun slices over the base of a large, 2-litre capacity ovenproof dish. Sprinkle with chopped dates and brown sugar. Whisk eggs and milk together and pour evenly over bun slices in dish. Stand for 10 minutes, then transfer dish to a 180°C preheated oven. Bake for 35-40 minutes or until pudding is well puffed and set in centre.

Serve warm with pouring cream or ice-cream if desired. Pudding can be prepared severa hours ahead. Keep refrigerated and bake as required.
