For a quick, easy and popular family dessert, try this golden, flaky strudel filled with sweet apple and juicy sultanas. Serve with a generous dollop of cream, ice-cream or both. It's also delicious cold.
1.Preheat oven to 200°C/400°F. Grease two oven trays.
2.Combine sugar and cinnamon in a small bowl.
3.Sprinkle 2 teaspoons of the sugar mixture over one pastry sheet. Place half the pie apple lengthways down one half of the pastry sheet; sprinkle with half the sultanas. Roll pastry carefully to enclose filling. Repeat process to make a second strudel.
4.Place strudels, seam-side down, on trays; brush with egg. Sprinkle strudels with remaining sugar mixture; bake, uncovered, for 20 minutes or until browned lightly. Stand 10 minutes before slicing.
Strudel is best made just before serving. You could replace the apples with canned pears.
