1.Preheat oven to 170°C/340°F. Grease five holes of 8-hole (½-cup/125ml) mini loaf pan; grease eight holes of 9-hole (½-cup/125ml) friand pan; grease 15 holes of 2 x 12-hole (1-tablespoon/20ml) mini muffin pans.
2.Make cakes according to directions on packets. Drop ⅓ cup of the mixture into greased mini loaf pan holes; drop 2½ level tablespoons of mixture into greased friand pan holes. Bake cakes about 25 minutes. Stand cakes in pans 5 minutes before turning, top-side up, onto wire rack to cool.
3.Drop 3 level teaspoons of the mixture into greased mini muffin pan holes; bake about 15 minutes. Stand cakes in pans 5 minutes before turning, top-side up, onto wire rack to cool.
4.To make butter cream, beat the butter (and any flavouring, if using) in a small narrow bowl with an electric mixer until the butter is as white as possible (this will result in a whiter butter cream which will give you better results if colouring it). Gradually beat in half the sifted icing sugar then the milk, then the remaining icing sugar. Beat until the butter cream is smooth and spreadable. Keep scraping down the side of the bowl during beating.
5.Divide butter cream into six small bowls; tint blue, purple, green, orange, red and pale pink.
6.Using picture as a guide, spread butter cream over cake tops. Secure cakes on 45cm x 55cm (18-inch x 22-inch) rectangular cake board with a little butter cream. Use three mini muffin cakes for each foot and two loaf cakes for each leg. Use one loaf cake and two friand cakes for the body. Use two friand cakes for each arm and one mini muffin cake for each hand.
7.Use two friand cakes for the face, two mini muffin cakes for ears and one mini muffin cake for nose. Use four mini muffin cakes for the juggling balls.
8.Position green and blue Smarties on the legs. Slice two fruit Allsorts into quarters. Position 13 red mini M&M’s and fruit allsorts quarters on body. Use the fruit ring halves to make the frill around clown’s neck
9.Cut a strip of red bootlace for mouth; position on face. Secure blue mini M&M’s to peppermints with a little butter cream; position on head for eyes. Trim freckle to make hat; position remaining red mini M&M’s at base of hat. Secure red Smartie on top of hat with a little butter cream.
10.Cut green sour strap into strips to make hair; top hands with small pink jelly beans to make fingers. Tie two 20cm (8-inch) pieces of red bootlace into bows; position for shoelaces.
11.Using star cutter, cut four stars from yellow layer of remaining fruit allsort; position on balls.
