Method

1.Blend or process sponge cakes into crumbs. Combine cake crumbs and cup of frosting in a large bowl. Roll 1/2 cups of mixture into six balls. Place on an oven tray, loosely cover with plastic wrap. Refrigerate for 2 hours or until firm.
2.Divide remaining frosting into two bowls. Tint one bowl with red colouring. Remove paper cases from muffins, trim tops from muffins so they are flat. Spread base and sides of muffins with red frosting. Secure muffins, cut-side down, on the cake board with a little frosting.
3.Place M&M’s in a shallow bowl. Spread white frosting all over cake balls, roll cake balls evenly in M&M’s to cover. Secure balls on top of muffins.
4.Use writing icing to pipe numbers on chocolate buttons (the number can be the birthday child’s age). Secure buttons on muffins.

Use Skittles as an alternative to the mini M&M’s. Store the cakes in an airtight container in a cool darkplace. Refrigerating the cakes will cause the colour on the M&M’s to run.
