The addition of brown sugar to the custard filling adds a caramel taste to this classic, while nutmeg adds warmth. If you can, buy a whole nutmeg and grate it fresh, just before use for the best taste.

If you don’t have time to make the shortcrust pastry from scratch, you can use three sheets frozen shortcrust pastry.
