Citrus and root vegetables are all booming in June, making it an excellent time for soups, bakes and lovely citrus cakes! Save money and eat better by picking food that is in season this June.

Banana

It’s a great time to load up on in-season bananas as bountiful harvest help keep prices low. It’s a wonderful time of the year to make a batch of banana cake with passionfruit icing, or a loaf of this tender and delicious banana bread. You can find fantastic oranges in June, which bring you even closer to making this gorgeous buttery citrus orange and lemon cake. You can also make a quick and easy orange jam. Kiwi fruit

Sweet kiwis are in season this month, so why not try this cheesecake recipe – decorated with slices of green and gold kiwifruit?. You can also make a kiwi and apple jam, or include it in this creative lychee, kiwi and lime salad.

Pomelo

Similar to grapefruit, pomelo are a large citrus fruit and has a similar flavour that is noticeably less sour. It’s perfect in this pomelo, lemongrass and kaffir lime marmalade and adds a welcome burst of sweetness to this pomelo salad.. We also included it in this Thai-inspired slaw along with mouthwatering marinated tofu.

Grapefruit

Like other citrus fruits, grapefruit is well-suited to jam-making, and this pink grapefruit marmalade makes excellent use of bountiful grapefruit this season. Dates

Get your fill of dates this month! Of course we’re all familiar with the beloved sticky date pudding and who doesn’t love a fresh batch of date scones, but with dates in season this month there is so much more you can do with this syrupy sweet fruit. In fact, dates have become very popular as a natural source of sweetness in sugar-free recipes like these sugar-free salted date caramels and these sugar-free carrot cakes with date cream cheese frosting.. Dates also work well in savoury recipes like this salad with dates, rocket and chicken., and in Middle-Eastern inspired dishes like this chicken tagine with dates and honey.

Cauliflower

Cauliflower is a delicious and versatile veg at its peak right now. The florets are perfect for making these cauliflower buffalo wings or this cheesy cauliflower bake. Onion

Almost every savoury dish we know relies on finely chopped onion to help build a rich flavour. But there are many recipes where onion gets to step out of the wings and into the spotlight. This caramelised onion and beetroot relish is one such recipe, and these caramelised onion, fig and prosciutto tarts. Caramelising the onions when adding them to pizza transforms the punchiness of raw onion to a sweet, sticky flavour that complements all sorts of dishes. Beetroot

Beetroot are in season in June which makes it the perfect time to pop some pickled beetroot on the shelf. This roasted beetroot salad with walnuts and feta is a delicious side salad, and this Turkish beetroot dip is a bright and delicious addition to any nibble platter. Swede

While raw swede most closely resembles a large turnip, it is also botanically related to cabbage. Also known as rutabaga, and Swedish turnip, swedes are a versatile root vegetable. We most often see swede mashed, like this smashed swede with chilli and herbs, but it’s also delicious baked with kumara. Also, nothing beats a delicious serving of swede soup.

Jerusalem artichokes

Despite its name the Jerusalem artichoke is not actually related to artichokes. In fact, it is a variety of sunflower with edible tubers and like other tubers (potatoes, yams, sweet potato and cassava, for example) is extremely versatile! These Jerusalmen artichoke crisps are a great garnish for the top of a Jerusalem artichoke soup. Brussels sprouts

We’re here to vindicate Brussels sprouts with these delicious recipes! Brussels sprouts with crispy pancetta is a dreamy side dish, and this salad of roasted Brussels sprouts and lentils is delicious especially with a generous shaving of parmesan. Sprouts can also be a great addition to stir-fries, like this pork and Brussels sprout stir-fry, or roasted with cauliflower and served with tahini dressing.
