01

broccoli

Gone are the days of overcooked broccoli slumped on the side of your plate. With broccoli in season this July it’s the perfect time to cook up delicious classics like this broccoli au gratin or chicken and broccoli bake. July is soup weather which makes it an ideal opportunity to make this broccoli and kale soup. Like cauliflower, broccoli makes an excellent low-carb rice alternative like in this prawn and broccoli fried rice recipe, and is also delicious roasted like in this broccoli, barley and haloumi dish.

02

celery

While we’ll always be happy to enjoy a stick of crunchy celery with a scoop of hummus, there is so much more this crispy green veg can bring to the table! This simple lunch of apple, celery and porchetta rolls is one of life’s pleasures. Celery adds a welcome zing to this classic chicken and leek pie. Celery also has a place in some of our favourite drinks, like this watercress and pineapple cooler, and who could forget a punchy bloody mary.

03

carrots

Get your fill of carrots this July as bountiful harvests bring the best this root veg has to offer. With more natural sugars than other veggies, carrots are perfect for roasting and develop an irresistible caramelised surface. Grated, carrots are a fabulous addition to corn fritters, and they blitz up deliciously to create this roasted carrot hummus.. But of course, we couldn’t talk about carrots without sharing a delicious carrot cake recipe.

04

Mandarin

Nothing marks the season like beautiful fresh mandarins popping up at the shops! Don’t be fooled into thinking mandarins are just for snacking, there are so many ways you can cook with these sweet, juicy citrus fruits. Some of our favourite mandarin recipes include this sweet mandarin jam, this warm pork and mandarin salad and this stunning barramundi recipe with mandarin salsa.

05

Kohlrabi

If you’re unfamiliar with kohlrabi July is the time to experiment as this vegetable comes into season! Despite its other name, “German turnip”, this squat vegetable actually has more in common with cabbages and broccoli. This kohlrabi and sweet potato rosti recipe makes use of the sweetish stem of the kohlrabi. This grilled haloumi salad chops the kohlrabi into matchsticks for a satisfying crunch. The leaves of kohlrabi are also edible, and are put to good use in this tamarind beef stir fry.

06

Radicchio

Vibrant red radicchio leaves are just the thing to brighten your plate during the typically colder month of July. With their milder flavour they pair perfectly with blue cheese and walnuts in this spaghetti dish. Blue cheese and radicchio meet again in this luscious baked risotto recipe. This simple radicchio and tomato salad is a wonderful side dish.

07

Cabbage

There are so many things you can do with bountiful cabbage! From simple things like this couscous, red cabbage and walnut salad, shaved cabbage with pecorino balsamic or the creamy slaw piled on these pulled pork buns to more ambitious recipes like this cabbage, pancetta and gorgonzola risotto or Japanese cabbage rolls it seems there’s nothing this leafy veg can’t do. We also just had to share this open reuben sandwich while we’re here.

08

Tangelo

A combination of pomelos and tangerines, tangelos are a hybrid citrus that come into season in July. These sweet citrus are very juicy and perfect for this tangelo tart recipe or, to be fair, this other tangelo tart recipe. Cook with tangelo anywhere you would cook with mandarin or orange, and definitely try making this tangelo jam while you can.

Nashi Pear Puds

09

Nashi

Nashi, a variety of Japanese pear, is recognised by its distinct round shape. Similar in sweetness and texture to other pear varieties, nashi is well suited to sweet recipes like this simple nashi galette or nashi pear puds. Nashi also pairs well with rich meats in savoury dishes like this pork cutlets with nashi recipe, or in this almond-crusted chicken recipe.

10

Strawberry

Despite its association with spring and summer, delicious strawberries are already here in July! Load them up on top of this decadent strawberry flan or scatter them across this delightful strawberry and almond friand slice or paired with rhubarb in these gorgeous sponge puddings. This peanut butter and jelly pavlova uses peanuts and fresh strawberries for an unbeatable flavour and texture, while this white chocolate and strawberry cheesecake just hits it out of the park.
